Here we see Doryman adding a boltrope to the edge of a new sail for his Good Little Skiff Paku. While this particular sail needs only ~30' of rope, it is not a quick task to complete -
A simple picture shows the work to be done -
Heavy waxed thread, a sharp sail needle, a fid to open the rope a bit, and hours and hours of patient sewing will result in a sail Bristol enough to waft Paku through the waters of the Puget Sound later this month.

That looks like a time consuming project. Is cotton rope the recommended material, or could you use wire rope?
Wire rope requires a very different application method - modern wire bolt rope material is bought already sewn into a sailcloth casing and is sewn onto the sail using a heavy-duty sewing machine.
The rope in this case is nylon. You would not be able to sew a wire rope to a sail in this manner and it would soon chafe your stitches apart anyway :-)
